St Johns Wort (Hypericum perforatum)

As wounded healers from time to time we can all use a little lift.  In one study we read, they compared St. John’s Wort in conjunction with exercise and Prozac, the study concluded that the St. John’s Wort and exercise was as effective in treating depression as Prozac.

St Johns Wort can be used effectively to treat depression, anxiety, seasonal affect disorder, and stress. Hypericum, is an emotional ally, contributing to our feel-good neurotransmitters such as dopamine, serotonin, GABA, and noradrenaline.

Note:

It is important to note that it takes 2 to 3 weeks for symptoms to be relieved.

Some individuals have sensitivity to sunlight while using St. John’s Wort.

If you are taking antidepressants or other medications consult with your healthcare practitioner.

 

Rose Hips (Rosa rugosa and Rosa canina)

Rose hips are high in vitamin C. They also contain calcium, vitamin A, magnesium, vitamin B6, beta-carotene, and lycopene, which boost the immune system. It helps the nervous system by converting amino acids into neurotransmitters. Rose hips supports heart health.  It certain studies, Rose hips were shown to reduce obesity, by reducing cholesterol and blood pressure… often times when people feel depressed, anxious, or stressed they over eat. Rose hips also reduce inflammation. Which can sometimes be a side effect of depression and anxiety

Note: if you are taking a mood stabilizer, rose hips may undermine its effectiveness.

 

Calendula (Calendula Officinalis)

Also known as the Happy Flower, Calendula has a reputation for promoting a sunny disposition. Also known as the plant collagen of the herb world. This plant can produce happiness on the inside and outside. These flowers are extremely healing.  Throughout history women have used this herb for skin in oils, teas, and tinctures. It heals skin wounds, burns and rashes, repels bugs and reduces inflammation. Calendula contains active antioxidants and volatile oils, therefore its naturally anti-septic and has amazing benefits for the skin. We grow Calendula in our gardens and put it in salads and other culinary dishes.

 

Lavender (Lavandula, officinalis, L. angustifolia)

The purple flowers of Lavender has many uses. Since ancient times it has been used for mental health, as it is very calming, uplifting, reducing stress, anxiety, mild depression, headaches, and pain. Lavender can strengthen the heart, and is said to increase courage. Lavender can be used to treat nervousness and insomnia. Lavender tincture can be rubbed directly on the temple to reduce headaches and insomnia.

 

Gotu Kola (Centella asiatica)

If rejuvenation is what you’re after, look no further than Gotu kola.  In Ayurvedic medicine it is considered a life force tonic and enhances memory. It is used to treat insomnia, reduce stress, nervousness and strengthens the heart. Gotu kola is also used to benefit ones yoga practice, as it provides mental clarity and calms the monkey mind. It acts as an antidepressant, and can boost cognition.

Note: Be patient with Gotu kola, it may take 2 to 3 weeks for improvements in functioning.

 

Astragalus (Huang-qi)

There are more than 2,000 species of Astragalus plants. They have been linked to numerous health benefits. In clinical studies Astragalus has been shown to relieve stress both physically and mentally. Astragalus boosts the immune system and aids in fighting infection. It is also used to treat chronic fatigue syndrome. In studies it has proven to be a protector of the heart.

Note: Astragalus has been used as a recovery herb after radiation and chemotherapy

Cautionary note:

As with all of our herbal extracts, if you are a recovering alcoholic or are sensitive to alcohol, it is best practice to add your extract to hot water, then wait a few minutes until the alcohol evaporates.

 

It is important to note that herbs are not miracle cures, be patient with your healing, it can takes 2 to 3 weeks for herbal remedies to relieve symptoms.
